While chocolate turtles have their rightful place in the candy shop, The Milk Shake Factory folks in Pittsburgh, PA decided a more decadent confection was needed, perhaps one incorporating salty pretzels for added texture. Snappers were the result and are sold in a 24 oz. pouch ($8.99; available at Costco). At 160 calories per Snap, so to speak, these treats can’t be gobbled down or enjoyed too quickly. The gooey caramel requires the Snappee to bite in and gently, gingerly pull the Snapper away, creating a strand of caramel that threatens to ooze down one’s chin. The chocolate, which offers a slightly bitter, gritty contrast to the sweet buttery caramel, is something you want to melt slowly in the mouth along with the caramel. If not for the crispy, salty pretzel, the perfect backbone in this sweet addiction, Snappers would not be as compelling as they are. The waffle-weave pattern of the thin pretzel sticks seems to cradle and anchor the gooey chocolate and caramel, offering fortification during the two to four bites required to completely demolish each Snapper. The pretzel also serves as a non-melting service the fingers can grasp during one’s slow, thoughtful consumption. Our prediction? These will be a big mover during the holiday season as both decadent hostess gift and office afternoon indulgence.
We were sent a sample of Snappers compliments of the Milk Shake Factory folks. Ashley Rickert, research associate, contributed to this post.
